Doctors

Why does ShootCert need doctors?

ShootCert’s continuing success combined with a change in the law means we need more doctors to verify our applicant’s full medical history in relation to their shotgun/firearm licence application or renewal.

If you have already been writing reports for the BASC medical panel, you will already be aware that you will NOT be required to state your opinion on whether to grant or refuse a licence – that responsibility lies entirely with the Police Firearms Department.

ShootCert will manage all the admin.

ShootCert will provide you with the applicant’s full and complete medical history as a PDF file. Your role is to carefully read through the applicant’s medical notes and identify if there are any entries relevant to the following:

  • Acute Stress Reaction or an acute reaction to the stress caused by a trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Suicidal thoughts or self-harm or harm to others
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Dementia
  • Mania, bipolar disorder or a psychotic illness
  • A personality disorder
  • A neurological condition: for example, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s or Huntington’s diseases, or epilepsy
  • Alcohol or drug abuse
  • Any other mental or physical condition, or combination of conditions, which may affect the safe possession of firearms or shotguns.

If any of the answers is Yes, to provide a very short precis of this.

How would I write a medical certificate for ShootCert?

All medical reports are completed online via our website. No special software is required – just an internet browser and Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.

ShootCert will provide you with private access to our secure online Certificate Generator process. You simply type your notes into the relevant section of the ShootCert medical certificate form. Once a certificate has been proofread and approved, it is automatically emailed or posted to the applicant.

Full training will be provided.
